Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer at Camp BUCKO. Camp BUCKO provides an opportunity for children recovering from burn injuries to meet other children who share similar feelings and experiences. Camp BUCKO is located in a new location, The Kinark Outdoor Centre, Minden, Ontario. Our camp is open to burn survivors between the ages of 7-17 years old. It is provided free of charge through the generous donations of firefighter associations, service groups, and other public and private organizations and donors.

Volunteers are an important part of the daily experience of our campers. Close volunteer/camper partnerships are established as volunteers “bunk-in” (some exceptions may apply) with their assigned cabins and participate in the campers daily activities. While campers come to Camp BUCKO to have fun with other children, they may have physical and emotional needs that are unique to children who are living with burn injuries.

Selected candidates will be interviewed by phone or in person, and will be chosen as volunteers based on the merits of the application, police check clearance and the interview. We are particularly interested in having volunteers represent the many regions where our campers reside, and we have a need for male volunteers. We hope that this new application process will enable us to choose volunteers that best meet the needs of our campers.

For the summer of 2010 we are asking that volunteers attend one full week of camp from Sunday August 8th to Saturday August 14th 2010 as well as a one overnight and one day orientation program held at The Kinark Outdoor Centre on Saturday June 6th to Sunday June 7th, 2010. The orientation program will offer you an opportunity to meet Camp BUCKO staff and volunteers. If this poses a particular hardship, please contact Nancy Sinclair at 647-282-8256. Your travel to and from the orientation program and the camp week will be reimbursed by Camp BUCKO.

The volunteer application process includes submission of the following:

  • A completed volunteer application form
  • A completed Vulnerable Sector Screening Police Check
  • Two letters of reference

Please note that that travel reimbursement for volunteers to and from the orientation and camp programs, when required, will be provided by Camp BUCKO. The costs for a police check vary from region to region, however, Camp BUCKO will only reimburse these costs for successful volunteers, so please keep your receipts and send them to us after you have been confirmed as a 2010 volunteer.

Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer with Camp BUCKO!
